Collectors sometimes refer to “CAC coins” as though every example involves the same label. In practice, the historic CAC sticker program and CAC-branded grading holders require different research. Check which product and standard applies to the specific coin.
Historically stickered holders
The classic CAC approval sticker was used on coins already encapsulated by certain grading services, to indicate CAC’s assessment under its then-applicable criteria. Stickers do not change the numerical grade on the original holder.
CAC Grading holders
CAC Grading also operates a grading and certification service with its own holders. It is not accurate to treat a CAC Grading holder and a third-party slab bearing a historical CAC sticker as identical products. Look up the current program and applicable guarantee on CAC’s own site.
Pricing a premium
Compare the same coin, date, grade, holder type, and approval or service status. A premium inferred from a standout auction can be misleading for an average example. Photos, certification checks, and recent comparable sales should be considered before making a bid.
Verification still matters
Neither a green mark nor a recognizable holder shape should replace careful inspection. Verify the certification record, inspect the coin and label for inconsistencies, and read the seller’s return terms. The current CAC program details are subject to change.
